St Dympna's Hall Kildalkey

St Dympna's Hall Kildalkey

Kildalkey Hall was built circa 1841 as a result of famine times in Ireland and was known as the Almshouses. It was dedicated to Kildalkey's patron Saint and is referred to as St. Dympna's Hall.

It was used to serve the poor of the parish during the famine and while poverty was indicative of the times in 19th century Ireland.

In times past, the Almshouses was used as a school from 1888 until the current school was opened in 1931.

St Dympna's Hall Kildalkey The hall underwent major refurbishment in 2007, particularly the front facade and again saw the return of school pupils as it now houses 2 classrooms from the local school.

This is as a result of the Celtic Tiger, which saw a huge increase in the local population. With the local school unable to cope with increased numbers. 2 rooms on the first floor are currently being used as classrooms for 3rd and 4th class pupils from September 2009.

A new hall was built to the rear of the Almshouses in 1974. This hall is also used by the community for various activities which require a larger audience. It is also currently used extensively by Kildalkey Badminton Club due to its much higher ceiling than the old hall.

There is also a parish dance held here monthly.
